The summit of Mount Whitney at 14,505 feet (4421 meters) of elevation is the highest mountain in California and the 48 contiguous United States. It rises steeply from the town of Lone Pine in the Owens River Valley and is said to have a prominence of 10,075 feet or nearly two miles!

Hikers and backpackers venture up to it’s lofty summit in the summer months and usually from the Mt. Whitney Portal Trailhead at about 8320 feet on the east side. It’s a trailhead that’s so popular that it has a store.

While there are over 50 Colorado Fourteeners, Mount Whitney tops them all and California only has five peaks over 14,000 feet. Whitney also bests the only 14k footer in Washington State, Mount Rainier, but that mountain is a much more technical endeavor.
