Lake Tahoe is the deepest lake in both California and Nevada since it straddles the border of these two states. Tahoe is a natural lake that was formed by glaciers during the ice ages. With a surface elevation of 6229 feet and a location in the Sierra Nevada Range, Tahoe is considered an alpine lake and is the largest one in the states.

At 1645 feet deep (501 meters) Tahoe is the second deepest lake in America after Crater Lake and it’s the 16th deepest in the world (and 5th deepest by average depth).

Lake Tahoe does have a dam to control the outflow into the Truckee River, but it only raises the lake level by 10 feet or so. Its purpose is to control water flow during the annual dry season.
