Pluto’s Cave is a lava tube in Northern California that is over a mile in length and has high ceilings most of the way. Near the entrance there are a couple cave-ins, but after that your hike will be completely dark to the end about a mile underground. Bring warm layers (as it’s cold down there) and extra flashlights. If you lose your only source of light down there it would be dangerous trying to get out.

This lava tube is getting discovered as a great hiking destination that doesn’t have the crowds and fees that nearby Lava Beds National Monument has.

Mount Shasta dominates the view from the trailhead (located at 41.5708, -122.27906) and the area outside the cave.

Pluto’s Cave Trail is listed in the Lavas Category for Siskiyou County in the state of California. Pluto’s Cave Trail is displayed on the "Lake Shastina" USGS topo map.
