This is the location of the historic Hakuma settlement on the coast of the Big Island near the former town of Kalapana which was buried under lava by flows from Pu’u O’o.

Hakuma and the nearby Cave of Refuge are in the only part of the island in this area that wasn’t covered by Pu’u O’o lava flows from 1983 to 2018. The hike to this area starts at the trailhead next to Kaimu Korner Country Store and follows the coastline westward for about a mile.
