The small entrance to Hakuma Cave of Refuge is difficult to find. It’s hidden in a densely vegetated area known as Hakuma near the former town of Kalapana in the Puna District of the Big Island of Hawaii. This area was mostly covered with lava from the Kilauea Volcano vent known as Pu’u O’o which flowed continuously from 1983 to 2018. The only spot spared destruction was a higher elevation landform known as Hakuma Korst. The lava flows reached the ocean on both sides but saved historic Hakuma which has many ancient man-made structures and several lava tubes which were used by the inhabitants of the area.

Getting to Hakuma Cave of Refuge starts by first hiking to the new Kaimu Black Sand Beach and then following the shoreline west to the vegetated area. The cave entrance is about 400 feet from the shore.
