Alcohol and Drug Abuse Lake isn’t far from downtown Columbia South Carolina, but few in the city would know of this strangely named lake. The US Army Corps of Engineers lists the name of the dam as being for the adjacent alcohol and drug abuse treatment facility. The USGS used the name of the dam to name the lake in their database – Alcohol and Drug Abuse Lake. The outflow of this reservoir flows into Crane Creek and then Broad River near Interstate 20.
Workers at the Morris Village treatment facility, which owns the lake, call it some version of Village Pond or Morris Village Lake. No matter what you call it, the lake is private and there is no public access to the shore. If we ever create a list of the most unique lake names in the US, this lake would be on it.
