Marineland of the Pacific was an aquatic amusement park (known as an oceanarium) located on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Los Angeles County. This park was one of the first to show off the talents of orcas, pilot whales, and dolphins for entertainment, something that SeaWorld has taken to another level. Marineland opened in 1954 and closed in 1987 then sat vacant and closed for almost 20 years.
This prime real estate couldn’t sit unused forever. It was purchased in 1995 for $24 million for the development of a coastal resort. It’s now the site of Terranea Resort which finally opened in the summer of 2009. Note that there is a public beach at Terranea now.
