China Beach is the original and current name of James D. Phelan Beach State Park in the Sea Cliff neighborhood of San Francisco. After 1976, when the state of California transferred the beach to the US Federal Government for inclusion in Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the feds were wise enough to change the name back to China Beach.
China Beach is a protected cove where Chinese fishermen congregated in the 1800s. In 1934 the state parks department decided to name newly acquired China Beach as James D Phelan State Park to honor the city’s one time mayor and advocate for saving the beach from development. The problem was that James D. Phelan was a proud white nationalist who ran for re-election to the Senate on a “keep California white” platform. The National Park Service decided to distance themselves from the controversial name.
Today China Beach is a popular place for San Francisco families to take their kids.
