After the Embarrass Mine Pit was abandoned it was allowed to fill naturally and the resulting lake became the deepest lake in the state that wasn’t one of the Great Lakes. It’s 465 feet at the deepest point and barely edges out other pit mine lakes in Minnesota. Starting in the 1980’s the lake was stocked with various fish species and it has become a popular trout fishing spot.
