The Fortune Creek 4×4 Trail starts on the main road that continues beyond Salmon la Sac (NF-4330) and then follows Fortune Creek Road (NF-621) for about three very slow and rough miles. Then the trail turns right and follows the South Fork of Fortune Creek up to Gallagher Head Lake. This is a moderately difficult 4WD route and should not be attempted in a vehicle that doesn’t have low four wheel drive gearing. The rocks are unavoidable in places and having large tires and a lift kit is helpful.
If you want to extend this backcountry drive there are two roads that continue beyond the lake. One goes up to a meadow below Hawkins Mountain. Another one dead ends at a high point above the head of Big Boulder Creek Valley. Each is fun to drive and it’s easy to turn around at the end.
Another slightly more difficult route turns off the main Fortune Creek 4×4 Route to head up to Van Epps Pass and over it to a former mining camp. On the way back the route loops back on a lower road before reconnecting with Fortune Creek. It’s best to do this loop in a counter-clockwise direction. The crux is a difficult move before the loop which can cause vehicle damage if you don’t get through it correctly each direction (coordinates 47.48006, -120.97572).
There are two large camp spots at Gallagher Head at the foot of Esmeralda Peak. Scramble up the hillside for a great view of the lake and the cliffs of Gallagher Head.
